Low carb products
I still haven’t tried a lot of low carb products since there isn’t a great selection up here on the northern devils island also known as Iceland. Most of the stuff I have to order online from Netrition.com – the low carb section. They have a good selection and ship internationally (I wish more companies would) and even with the shipping cost, customs and all that crap I need to pay for living in an isolated but beautiful country I think it’s worth it. So let me give you a review of the things I’ve tried so far. These are all sweet things as I’m a little scared that stuff like low carb wraps, cookies etc will contain some weird additives. Who knows, maybe I´ll try them later but now I’m content with making my own.
Disclaimer: Some people are more sensitive to artificial sweeteners in low carb products than others. I can eat sugar alcohols like Splenda etc without it kicking me out of ketosis or giving me cravings for sweet things, but not everyone can handle it. I use these foods as a rare treat not an everyday thing. I also think that some low carb food items contain gluten or give you an insulin response and that might mess with you. ALSO, many of them are NOT low calorie foods, so watch your portions.
First of all, the Da Vinci Sugar Free Syrups. I think they’re great! I’ve used them for 1 minute chocolate flax/coconut (or almond) meal muffins, my coffee (frozen latte with heavy cream.. aww yeah!), cheesecakes, waffles and more! You only need a tiny amount to get a ton of flavor and they come in lots of different kinds. My favorites are caramel, chocolate and coconut and next on my list to try is cookie dough, peppermint (for ice cream), chai tea and cinnamon. They even have loads more, I could fill my kitchen with them all.
Bob’s Red Mill Almond Meal/Flour. This is something I use a LOT along with Bob’s Red Mill Coconut Flour and Bob’s Red Mill Flaxseed Meal. I’ve come to love these three products and I can tell you that I don’t miss regular flour at all! I make everything with this: waffles, pound cake, muffins, cheesecake, crackers etc. You know, when you’re sick of bacon, eggs and steak (it happens) it’s nice to grab something that resembles bread or cake.
NOW Hot Cocoa, No Sugar Added. THIS THIS THIS! I got this beauty before Christmas even I wasn’t in full keto mode yet, just dabbling. The thing is – it’s a tradition in my family to have hot chocolate on Christmas morning (along with other goodies) and I didn’t even feel like I was missing out on anything when I had this with some whipped heavy cream. So delicious. I’ve had a mug of it every now and then, mostly when it’s snowing like crazy and I just wanna sit under a thick blanket and watch Star Trek.
Nature’s Hollow Sugar Free Preserves. I love this stuff. Only2 Net carbs for 1 serving (1 tbsp) but I never use that much, only a teaspoon on my 1 minute flax/almond muffin topped with butter, cheese and this 🙂 Hmmmm I think I know what I’m having for breakfast tomorrow. These guys actually make lots of other stuff I’d love to try, like Sugar Free BBQ Sauce and Sugar Free Ketchup. They use xylitol for their products and from what I understand it has a very low glycemic index.
This is all I got for now regarding low carb products. I’m going to try some more stuff from them later and I´ll post reviews as soon as I try them out! Now who says low carb/keto is nasty and that you can’t have nice things? It’s totally not true, I’m always cooking, baking and trying out new stuff. I love it! Low carb products kinda make my life easier.
