There are different types of low carb diets and many people wonder how many carbs they should eat per day on the diet and there isn’t a simple answer.
- If you’re on the ketogenic diet, also called keto or LCHF (low carb, high fat), like me, you should stay under 20 grams of carbs a day. This will help you lose weight very quickly.
- For a very low carb diet you should stay under 50 grams of carbs a day. Your body should still go into ketosis and you´ll still lose weight rather quickly.
- For a semi-low carb diet, stay under 100 grams of carbs a day. You will not lose weight as fast but it’s still considered low carb. Maybe good for people who still want to eat fruit etc.
- For a moderately low carb diet, stay under 150 grams of carbs a day. Honestly, I would barely call this low carb, but compared to the SAD (standard American diet), which is indeed sad, it’s low carb.
Even if the ketogenic diet, staying under 20 grams of carbs a day, sounds difficult I honestly think it’s easier than being on, say 100 grams a day. I’ve tried it, but the blood sugar fluctuations make me hungrier and have more cravings for sugar. Plus I didn’t lose any weight and was stalled until I went back to keto.
So, how many carbs should you eat on a low carb diet?
I wholeheartedly recommend staying under 20 grams, but anything under 150 is technically considered low in carbs. Maybe you could start with 150 and try lowering it. As you go lower, you´ll find you don’t get as hungry and don’t crave carbs as much. If you start with a keto diet of under 20 grams carbs a day you may find yourself experiencing a worse case of keto flu than if you start slowly. It’s up to you, just try it and see how it goes.
But please be aware that the first days will be difficult and you might want to give up after just 1-2 days, especially if you’re used to eating a lot of carbs. But believe me, it gets better! I promise. So just try to push through the worst carb withdrawal. Eat fatty foods instead of carbs 🙂
